"There arose": "Oh, how wonderful is the knowledge of past lives of the One with Ten Powers! Who recollects past lives, and who does not?" Non-Buddhist sectarians recollect, disciples, paccekabuddhas, and Buddhas recollect. Which non-Buddhist sectarians recollect? Those who have attained the foremost rank among teachers of action, they too recollect only forty aeons, not beyond that. Disciples recollect one hundred thousand aeons. The two chief disciples, an incalculable period and one hundred thousand aeons. Paccekabuddhas, two incalculable periods and one hundred thousand aeons. But for Buddhas there is no such limitation: as much as they desire, so much do they recollect.
