"He emerges quite pure": the meaning is that just as other beings emerge touching the birth canal, broken and shattered, he does not emerge in this way; he emerges untouched. "By water" [means] with water. "By any impurity": just as other beings, propelled by birth-winds, with feet upwards and head downwards, thrown into the birth canal like people falling into a hundred-fathom precipice of hell, like an elephant being dragged through a keyhole, experiencing great suffering, emerge completely smeared with various impurities, the Bodhisatta does not [emerge] in this way. For the birth-winds cannot turn the Bodhisatta with his feet upwards and his head downwards. He, like a preacher of the Dhamma descending from the Dhamma-seat, or like a man descending a ladder, stretching out his two hands and two feet, standing straight, emerges completely unsmeared by any impurity produced from the mother's womb.
