Evaṃ ekassa bhikkhuno nigamanañca nāmañca dassetvā itarassa dassetuṃ aṭṭha kho imetiādimāha. Tattha vimokkhoti kenaṭṭhena vimokkho? Adhimuccanaṭṭhena. Ko panāyaṃ adhimuccanaṭṭho nāma? Paccanīkadhammehi ca suṭṭhu muccanaṭṭho, ārammaṇe ca abhirativasena suṭṭhu muccanaṭṭho, pituaṅke vissaṭṭhaṅgapaccaṅgassa dārakassa sayanaṃ viya aniggahitabhāvena nirāsaṅkatāya ārammaṇe pavattīti vuttaṃ hoti. Ayaṃ panattho pacchime vimokkhe natthi, purimesu sabbesu atthi.

Having thus shown the conclusion and the name for one bhikkhu, in order to show them for the other, he said: 'There are, indeed, these eight,' and so on. Therein, "liberation" (vimokkha): in what sense is it liberation? In the sense of resolving (adhimuccana). Now what is this sense of resolving? It is the sense of being thoroughly released from opposing states, and the sense of being thoroughly released upon an object by way of delight; it means proceeding upon an object without constraint and free from apprehension, like a child lying with outstretched limbs in his father's lap. This meaning, however, is absent in the last liberation; it is present in all the preceding ones.
