"Possessing form, he sees forms": here, the fine-material jhāna produced internally in hair and so forth by way of the blue kasiṇa and so forth is 'form'; because he has that, he 'possesses form'. "He sees forms externally": through the eye of jhāna, he sees forms such as the blue kasiṇa externally as well. By this, the four fine-material-sphere jhānas of a person who has produced jhāna on kasiṇas having an internal and external basis are shown. "Perceiving formlessness internally": not perceiving form internally; the meaning is, one who has not produced a fine-material-sphere jhāna in his own hair and so forth. By this, the fine-material-sphere jhānas of a person who has produced jhāna externally, having made the preliminary work externally, are shown.
