‘As it pleases you’ means as it suits you. ‘A slave’ means one among those born in the house, bought with money, brought from a captured enemy, or who entered slavery by himself. ‘A hired laborer’ means one who is not lazy, having the nature of performing work. ‘He rises first’ because, seeing [his master] from afar, he rises first. Thus having risen, he arranges a seat for his master, performs the tasks that should be done, such as washing the feet, and afterwards lies down or sits down; thus ‘he retires last.’ Or, when the master has not yet risen from his bed, he rises beforehand; thus ‘he rises first.’ Beginning from the time of dawn until the master falls asleep at night, he performs all duties and afterwards lies down, takes his rest; thus ‘he retires last.’ ‘What shall I do? What shall I do?’—thus inquiring in order to carry out whatever is to be done, he conducts himself; thus ‘eager to manage what is to be done.’ He performs only pleasing actions; thus ‘pleasing in conduct.’ He speaks only pleasant words; thus ‘pleasant in speech.’ He conducts himself watching the satisfied and cheerful face of his master; thus ‘looking up at his face.’
