‘Restrained in body’ means closed off in body, having blocked the entrance-door for the unwholesome; this is the meaning. This same method applies also to the remaining two words. ‘Content with mere food and clothing’ means supreme through food and clothing, content through the highest austerity, having abandoned improper search even for the sake of these; this is the meaning. ‘Delighting in solitude’ means delighted in threefold solitude, as it is said: ‘Physical solitude for those whose bodies stand in seclusion; mental solitude for those delighted in renunciation; and solitude from the acquisitions [of existence] for persons free from acquisitions, who have reached the supreme purification and attained the unconditioned.’ The meaning is: abandoning socializing with groups, he dwells solitary in body; abandoning socializing with the defilements of the mind, he dwells solitary by way of the eight attainments; or, having entered the attainment of the fruit or the attainment of cessation, having reached Nibbāna, he dwells [therein]. ‘Yagghe’ is a particle in the sense of an urging.
