‘We would invite him with a seat’ means: dusting off the seat we were sitting on, we would say, ‘Sit here.’ ‘We would even invite him’ means: even bringing [requisites] to him, we would invite him. In that regard, bringing is of two kinds: by speech and by body. For one who says, ‘At whatever time you wish, tell us whatever you need by way of robes and so forth,’ is called inviting by bringing [offerings] by speech. But noticing a lack of robes and so forth and giving them, saying, ‘Take this,’ is called inviting by bringing [offerings] by body. Referring to both of these, he said, ‘We would even invite him.’ And here, ‘requisite of medicines for the sick’ means whatever medicine is suitable for the sick person. Its word-meaning, however, is stated in the Visuddhimagga. ‘Rightful protection, defense, and guard’ means protection designated as shielding and designated as defense. But this [protection] is not provided in a rightful way by posting men with weapons in hand. Rather, by arranging that wood-gatherers, grass-gatherers, and the like do not enter the monastery at improper times, and hunters and the like do not catch deer or fish within the monastery boundary—by arranging it in this way, rightful protection is provided. In reference to that, he said ‘rightful.’
