Pabbatasaṅkhepeti pabbatamatthake. Anāviloti nikkaddamo. Sippiyo ca sambukā ca sippisambukaṃ. Sakkharā ca kathalāni ca sakkharakathalaṃ. Macchānaṃ gumbā ghaṭāti macchagumbaṃ. Tiṭṭhantampi carantampīti ettha sakkharakathalaṃ tiṭṭhatiyeva, itarāni carantipi tiṭṭhantipi. Yathā pana antarantarā ṭhitāsupi nisinnāsupi vijjamānāsupi ‘‘etā gāvo carantī’’ti carantiyo upādāya itarāpi carantīti vuccanti. Evaṃ tiṭṭhantameva sakkharakathalaṃ upādāya itarampi dvayaṃ tiṭṭhantanti vuttaṃ. Itarañca dvayaṃ carantaṃ upādāya sakkharakathalampi carantanti vuttaṃ. Tattha cakkhumato purisassa tīre ṭhatvā passato sippikasambukādīnaṃ vibhūtakālo viya āsavānaṃ khayāya cittaṃ abhinīharitvā nisinnassa bhikkhuno catunnaṃ saccānaṃ vibhūtakālo daṭṭhabboti.

"In a mountain cleft" means on the top of a mountain. "Clear" means free of mud. Shells and snails together are "shells and snails." Gravel and pebbles are "gravel and pebbles." Schools, groups of fish, are "schools of fish." In the phrase "both standing and moving," here the gravel and pebbles only stand still, while the others both move and stand still. But just as when cattle are standing or lying down here and there in between, they are referred to by those that are moving, saying, "Those cattle are moving," so too, in reference to the gravel and pebbles that are only standing still, both of the other two are also said to be "standing." And in reference to the other two that are moving, even the gravel and pebbles are said to be "moving." There, just as it is clear for a man with vision standing on the bank looking at the shells, snails, and so forth, so the clarity of the four truths should be understood for the monk who sits having directed his mind toward the destruction of the taints.
