Māra, they say, [thought:] "The Teacher is teaching the Dhamma to these wanderers, roaring loudly and revealing the Buddha's powers; perhaps there might be penetration of the Dhamma; come, I will obsess them." Thus he obsessed their minds. For the minds of those whose distortions are unabandoned can be influenced by Māra as he pleases. They too, their minds obsessed by Māra, sat silent and without inspiration, as if their limbs and members were rigid. Then the Teacher, reflecting, "These wanderers are sitting very silent; why is that?", knew that they were obsessed by Māra. But if they had the conditions for the arising of the paths and fruits, the Blessed One would have taught the Dhamma even after repelling Māra; however, they did not have them. He knew, "All of these are hollow men." Hence it was said: "Then it occurred to the Blessed One: 'All these are foolish men,'" and so forth.
