There, "touched by the Evil One" means touched by Māra the Evil One. "In that..." means in whom. "Even for the purpose of knowing" means even for the sake of understanding. "What will seven days do?" means: what will seven days, as specified by the ascetic Gotama, do to us? This is what is meant: "The ascetic Gotama said, 'having realized it himself through direct knowledge, he will enter and dwell in it for seven days'; what discomfort will that seven days bring us? Come, let us lead the holy life even for the purpose of knowing whether it is possible or not possible to realize this Dhamma within seven days." Alternatively: "Let us understand his Dhamma first"—not even once in a single day did the thought occur to them, even for the purpose of knowing; what, then, will seven days do for these lazy ones? How could they be able to complete seven days? This is the meaning here. "Lion's roar" means having roared a fearless roar that crushes the doctrines of others and exalts one's own doctrine. "Stood near" means was established. "Right then" means at that very moment. "Entered Rājagaha" means he went into Rājagaha itself. However, although no distinction arose for those wanderers upon hearing this discourse, nevertheless it will be a condition for their [beneficial] imprint in the future. Everything else everywhere is quite clear.
