“By rising up” means by rising from one's seat. For a pupil, seeing the teacher coming from afar, should rise from his seat, go out to meet him, take the bundle from his hand, prepare a seat, have him sit down, and perform fanning, foot-washing, and foot-anointing. In reference to this, it is said: “by rising up.” “By attending” means by going to attend on him three times a day. At the time of learning a craft, however, one must necessarily go. “By willingness to learn” means by listening with faith. For one who listens without faith does not attain distinction. “By personal service” means by personal service in the remaining minor duties. For a pupil, having risen early in the morning, must give the teacher water for rinsing the mouth and a tooth-stick, and at mealtime also, take drinking water, provide attendance and so forth, and depart having venerated him. Soiled garments and the like must be washed, and bath water made ready in the evening. In times of discomfort, he should be attended to. Even by one who has gone forth, the entire duty of a pupil must be performed. In reference to this, it is said: “by personal service.” “By thoroughly mastering the craft”: thoroughly mastering means taking a little and reciting it many times; even a single word should be grasped entirely clearly.
