Vītarāgassāti maggena vā samucchinnarāgassa samāpattiyā vā vikkhambhitarāgassa. Dānamatteneva hi brahmaloke nibbattituṃ na sakkā. Dānaṃ pana samādhivipassanācittassa alaṅkāro parivāro hoti. Tato dānena muducitto brahmavihāre bhāvetvā brahmaloke nibbattati. Tena vuttaṃ ‘‘vītarāgassa no sarāgassā’’ti.
‘Of one free from lust’ (vītarāgassa) means of one whose lust is eradicated by the path, or whose lust is suppressed by an attainment. For it is not possible to be reborn in the Brahma-world merely through giving. But giving is an adornment and equipment for the mind of concentration and insight. Then, having a mind softened through giving, developing the divine abodes, one is reborn in the Brahma-world. Therefore it is said: ‘Of one free from lust, not of one with lust.’
