Yaṃ mahāsamuddoti ettha yanti samayassa paccāmasanaṃ. Bhummatthe cetaṃ paccattavacananti āha ‘‘yasmiṃ samaye’’ti. So ca samayo ayanti dassento ‘‘pañcame sūriye uṭṭhite’’ti āha. Regarding “which great ocean” (yaṃ mahāsamuddo): here, “which” (yaṃ) refers to the time. And since this nominative case is used in a locative sense, he says: “at which time.” And showing what that time is, he says: “when the fifth sun has arisen.” I do not state a limitation, because the highest-path knowledge that produces the limitation has not been attained. The fool, dependent on the round of rebirth, is like a dog because he has no control over himself. The bond of wrong view is like a leash. The individual personality belongs to him because he has no control over it. The ordinary person’s turning after the individual personality is designated separately by differentiating it from that, thinking: “the convention of a ‘being’ applies to the continuity [of aggregates].”
