...vicious beings, / Vasu and Ajātaśatru, / Devadatta and Aṅgulimāla, / through sins committed with body and mind, / although deserving of falling to the Avīci hell, / because they gave rise to faith and bowed / to the Victors of the three times in the ten directions, / just as the Sage was on the verge of passing into nirvāṇa, / their fall was postponed for countless eons. / As for all the people of Magadha, / their giving rise to bodhicitta as well / was by the power of paying respectful homage / to the Victors of the three times in the ten directions. / Kauṇḍinya and the others, / and the five hundred purified śrāvakas / who will attain buddhahood in future times, / also do so through the power of paying respectful homage / to the Victors of the three times in the ten directions. / The tīrthikas, brāhmaṇas, / and the ten ṛṣis who were great dhāraṇī-holders, / who have now attained arhatship, / likewise gained the sublime meaning / by the merit of having paid homage to the past Victors / of the three times in the ten directions. / And all the hosts of bodhisattvas / in the victorious realms of the ten directions / who took birth in the realm of Amitāyus, / did so through the power of paying respectful homage / to the Victors of the three times in the ten directions. / Prince Kalyāṇadarśin, it was like this: / In the past, when I was a king / and a great sage named Dāna, / at that time no buddha had appeared. / For twenty complete years / I offered the provisions of renunciants— / food, robes, / dwellings, and bedding— / to five hundred brāhmaṇas. / At that time, I exhorted them: / "Generate bodhicitta!" / Those five hundred brāhmaṇas, / although receiving the offerings, / lacked faith in the Three Jewels, / and immediately replied to me: / "In this world, there is no bodhi, / nor is there any liberation!" / When I heard them say that, / in order to protect the Vaipulya sūtra, / I took the lives of those five hundred brāhmaṇas. / When those brāhmaṇas passed away, / they fell into the Avīci hell.
