Having fallen into the hells of sentient beings, / the three kinds of mindfulness arose in them, / and they paid homage to the Victors of the three times. / Having generated faith in the Vaipulya sūtra / and the saṅgha of enlightenment, / through their three kinds of mindfulness, / they immediately left hell and departed. / They took birth in the sweet dew drum world, / and lived for ten minor kalpas. / That too was the merit / of bowing to the Victors of the ten directions with a respectful mind. / Although all those brāhmaṇas / initially fell into hell due to blasphemy, / they were later freed immediately through faith. / As for you bodhisattvas, / what need is there to speak of your conscience? / Because from the beginning the nature of sins / does not exist, for the sake of sentient beings, / confess the four root precepts, / the sins of the five ānantaryas, / and all the way through wrongful conduct! / If any ordinary worldly beings / who have committed such sins / are able to confess and repent in this manner, / the sins of the four root downfalls, the five ānantaryas, / and all the way through wrongful conduct will be purified, / and there is no doubt they will achieve buddhahood! / Those lacking faith are not included here; / but for whoever gives rise to faith / and pays homage to the Victors, / it is impossible for them not to attain the path of Dharma.' / Then Prince Kalyāṇadarśin / and the three thousand people, / speaking in unison, / addressed the Bhagavān: 'May we, / having attained buddhahood, / cross over the pure ones of saṃsāra from birth and death! / Since You reside as venerable among gods and men, / please explain this with clear distinctions. / As for memorizing it as a dhāraṇī, / writing it down, reading it, and keeping it, / how much merit is there in that?' / The Bhagavān replied: / 'I shall explain it with distinctions, / Prince Kalyāṇadarśin, listen well! / If someone, using the seven precious substances, / made gifts and offered presents / to sentient beings filling a thousandfold realm, / and on top of that taught them the Dharma, / causing them to attain the fruit of an arhat...'
