striking their heads and piercing through to their feet, multiplying all the suffering explained above a hundred, a thousand, and ten-thousandfold. If someone completely breaks all four roots, they will experience great suffering until five great eons are completed. For breaking the eight precepts, it is multiplied beyond that. For the five ānantaryas, it is also multiplied beyond that. For defaming the sūtras of samatā, it is also multiplied beyond that. Cursing the Three Jewels, stealing the property of the saṅgha, engaging in impure conduct toward celibate monks and nuns, cheating one's preceptors and masters, and committing incest with one's mother—all these are multiplied even beyond the former. As for those of wrongful conduct, their roots of virtue are entirely severed; therefore, that they never emerge even from the Avīci Hell is apart from this.
When those sinners experience suffering, fiercely spreading fire penetrates inside them, suffocating them so that they die. Then the rākṣasa hell guardians strike their iron stakes on the ground and shout, ‘Revive, revive!’ And in accordance with that shouting, they revive again and again, dying ten thousand times and returning to life ten thousand times in a single day and night, experiencing great unbearable suffering, just as set forth above.
When at some time they eventually emerge from the Avīci Hell, because of breaking their moral discipline and accepting offerings from faithful patrons, they enter into the minor hells: the Freezing Hell, the Pitch-Black Hell, the Extremely Hot Hell, the Razor-Edged Hell, the Sword-Wheel Hell, the Flaming Chariot Hell, the Mud of Excrement Hell, the Boiling Water Hell, the River of Embers Hell, the Sword-Leaf Forest Hell, the Iron Mechanical Trap Hell, the Iron Śālmali Hell, the Iron
