they protected their bodies with loving-kindness, upheld the Buddha-dharma, and with great compassion constantly accomplished the benefit and happiness of all throughout the ten directions. Any sentient being who, even at the point of death, hears the names of these bodhisattvas—whether of one, two, three, four, up to all seventy—and goes for refuge with life and limb, will immediately upon passing away be born miraculously from a lotus in a world realm where a Buddha resides. They will be entirely free from lust, will not be born from a womb, and will be free from foul odors and filth. Their bodies will be entirely pure and fragrant, and they will be pleasing to all and revered. Being pleasing to all and revered, their minds will become exceedingly joyful. Through this great joy of mind, they will arouse the mind of unsurpassed, perfect awakening. Having aroused the mind of unsurpassed, perfect awakening, they will cultivate a mind of loving-kindness and great compassion toward all sentient beings. Having thus cultivated a mind of loving-kindness and compassion, there will arise in them a mind that never neglects any living being with indifference. Furthermore, there will arise a mind to benefit and bring happiness to all sentient beings, a mind to accomplish one's own and others' welfare, a mind to dispel obscurations and obstacles, a mind to pacify afflictions, a mind to associate with and constantly honor spiritual friends, a mind to listen to the Dharma with longing interest, a mind to remember unforgettably and retain good meaning as a dhāraṇī, a mind to understand much meaning from little listening, and a mind unwilling to listen much without understanding the meaning. Then, there will arise a mind of clarity toward reality itself and a mind of faith in the true meaning of suchness.
