"Because he performed supreme merit toward the Saṅgha, he met a spiritual friend and attained the fruit of the path." Ānanda said, "Bhagavān, please teach the actual account of that." The Bhagavān told Ānanda: "Listen well! Long ago in the past, beyond a thousand measureless lifespans, the Buddha Bhagavān named Vipaśyin appeared in the world. Having acted for the benefit and happiness of gods and humans, he passed completely into nirvāṇa. After he had passed into nirvāṇa, there was a young bhikṣu practicing the genuine Dharma who was exceedingly skilled in the mātrikā, the sūtras, and the vinaya; whose appearance was handsome and fine; who possessed the physical marks of human beings; who was confident in teaching the Dharma; and whose voice and words when speaking the Dharma were melodious, so that kṣatriyas and brāhmaṇas associated with him and showed him service and reverence. At that time, there was an elderly bhikṣu whose appearance was extremely ugly, who lacked the physical marks of human beings, and whose voice was grating, yet who continually praised the Three Jewels in words and song. Then that young bhikṣu who possessed the three baskets said to that bhikṣu with the grating voice: 'You speaking with such a grating voice is just like a dog barking!' Thereupon that elderly bhikṣu said to the young bhikṣu: 'Do you not know who I am, that you speak evil words to me?' That bhikṣu who possessed the three baskets said: 'I know who you are: you are the old bhikṣu named Mahāla who went forth into the genuine Dharma of the Buddha Vipaśyin. Why would I not know you?' The bhikṣu Mahāla said: 'Now my task has been done; I have lived the brahmacarya; I shall take on no further existence.' Thereupon, as soon as the young bhikṣu who possessed the three baskets heard these words, his hair stood on end
