days, he will descend to Jambudvīpa seven days from now." At that time, the six tīrthika teachers heard this and felt jealousy arise. Tormented by the grief of intense displeasure, the six teachers and their followers sat down together and plotted as follows: "If the ascetic Gautama comes and arrives here in Jambudvīpa, all the people will abandon us and make offerings to the ascetic Gautama, so we will become destitute, impoverished, and near to death." Having conferred, the six tīrthika teachers then thought: "Let us go quickly to where many people gather and proclaim to the crowd: 'Let all know this: the ascetic Gautama in truth knows nothing at all! He is merely a small child who came out of the palace of the Śākya clan, sat for a long time beneath the Bodhi tree, and claimed, "I have attained all-knowing gnosis!" Those words are a lie; they are not true. Why so? King Agnidatta invited him for an alms offering, but gave him only horse fodder and treated him poorly, yet [Gautama] did not know it and went there anyway; hence he is not all-knowing! Furthermore, when he asked Ānanda, "How many days remain until the observance?" Ānanda replied, "Seven days remain." Again, when he asked Ānanda, "Why are many birds making a noisy clamor in the grove?" [Ānanda] replied, "It is because the many birds are fighting over food." Seven days after he was born his mother died, so based on that too, he is not omniscient! He is inauspicious and extremely sinful! How is that evident? Because as soon as he was born, his mother died. Moreover, whereas he was of a station that should have served his father with filial piety, he did not render service, but got up and went to the mountains; hence he is ungrateful! The king, his father, [took] Queen Mahāprajāpatī'
