he took her, he did not treat her as a wife; causing queen Mahāprajāpatī to experience great suffering, he is ungrateful and does not remember kindness. The retinue of the ascetic Gautama has no distinction between good and bad, and each of the five hundred disciples also says, 'I am the foremost!' Because the preceptor has no proper religious conduct, the disciples also lack religious conduct or proper deeds. Even the lowest, like the monk Thabye'u who spreads the seats, says, 'I am the foremost of all!' Śāriputra, the foremost in sharp intellect, great in insight and intelligent, is there, yet the dull-witted and ignorant monk Panthika also enters among them. Even the nun Yaśodharā, who had few desires in her youth, enters among them; and in Śrāvastī, even the wicked snake-selling woman Utpalavarṇā enters among them. Even the youth Cunda, who lacks intellect and discernment in his childhood, enters among them; and even that inner decrepit elder called Devasuvrata, who is one hundred and twenty years old, enters among them. The noble and great Śākyan clan enters among them, and even the low-caste sweeper from inside Śrāvastī enters among them. Therefore, the dharma of the ascetic Gautama is a gathered throng without distinction of good or bad, and is not a worthy object of offerings or reverence! For instance, just as when a great wind arises, all tree leaves and foliage are heaped together, the Dharma of the Buddha is just like that. Therefore, why do you think of making offerings to the ascetic Gautama?' Thus they proclaimed. At that time, although many people heard them speak thus, just as the great earth is immovable, their devoted and reverent minds toward the Tathāgata, like those tormented by thirst, did not waver. That their minds did not waver at the words spoken in the midst of the multitudes by the six non-Buddhist teachers was just as
