Kalyāṇakārin would not listen, saying, "If you do not permit me to go to the great ocean, I will never take food or drink!" / Tormented by grief and unhappiness, the king and queen wept before him, uttered laments, and rolled upon the ground. / In this way, after one day without eating or drinking, then two days, three days, up to six days without eating or drinking, his father and mother were afflicted with even greater grief. Fearing that he would not survive, when the seventh day arrived, the father and mother took his hands and feet into their laps, kissed his hands and feet, and said in sweet and gentle words: "Now arise, eat food, and drink! This body, made of food, stays alive depending on the condition of sustenance. If you do not eat and drink, your life will not endure!" / Although they encouraged him, the prince would not listen, saying, "If my father and mother do not permit me to go, I will certainly never rise from this very spot!" / At that time, the chief queen said to the king: "This resolve the prince has conceived is extremely difficult to carry out. Can your heart bear for the prince to pass away right here? It is not right to oppose his will. You should take pity on him and permit him to go to the great ocean. If you grant permission to go, he might perhaps return someday. But if you do not grant it now, he will undoubtedly pass away." / The king also could not bear it, and granted him permission to go. / Having thus been granted permission, Prince Kalyāṇakārin then rose from where he lay, overjoyed and delighted, and bowed his head to the feet of his father, the king. / The king's retinue, the queens, the palace ladies, and hundreds of thousands of people said to one another, "Is Prince Kalyāṇakārin alive or dead right now?" When such rumors circulated, [others] replied, "Prince Kalyāṇakārin has now arisen, and being overjoyed, he is even eating and drinking!"
