addressed: 'It is wonderful that the mother's wishes have been realized! Mother, upon hearing that Ānanda granted permission to enter the teaching of the Tathāgata, she was exceedingly joyful: "Through this impermanent body of mine, today I have obtained an enduring, precious body. This life of mine, shifting and passing moment by moment, has today become a precious life. Hitherto my body, life, and wealth were merely composite conditions, but now I have found precious wealth." Having thus perceived such great benefits and virtues of well-being, she conceived a mind of extraordinary reverence and veneration toward Ānanda, and said to Ānanda: "Have no doubt! I shall practice in accordance with what the Tathāgata intentionally taught, and even at the cost of body and life, I will not transgress it." Then the Tathāgata explained in detail the eight dharmas to be respected, which are not to be transgressed. At that time, Mother Gautamī, driven by the force of great compassion, addressed the Bhagavān for the sake of all future women: 'Venerable Bhagavān, in future times, if there are women who have faith and aspiration toward the Buddha's teachings, please grant that they too may enter the dispensation!' The Bhagavān replied: 'Splendid! Any woman who guards and upholds the Buddha's teachings and gradually trains in morality, generosity, extensive learning, and wholesome qualities—whether she goes forth or remains a householder—is permitted to take the three refuges, the five fundamental precepts, up to the complete precepts, and enter into liberation and the factors of awakening. If she exerts herself therein, she will attain the three fruits and will reach the nirvāṇa of gods and humans.' Gautamī, hearing this said, was filled with joy, delight, and gladness of heart, and said to the Bhagavān: 'That I have attained the fruits is also due to the kindness of the Buddha! Bhagavān
