I would ask the Bhagavān." The Bhagavān replied, saying, "Ask whatever you wish." Ānanda then addressed the Bhagavān thus: "Mother Gautamī nurtured and raised the Tathāgata's physical body, and his present awakening was also brought about by mother's agency; she has been of great kindness to the Tathāgata. If the Tathāgata permits even all sentient beings to enter the Buddha's teaching, what need is there to speak of mother entering the Buddha's teaching?" The Bhagavān replied to Ānanda: "It is just as you have said: the Tathāgata does not fail to recognize that mother has been of great kindness to the Tathāgata. Yet, women have not been permitted to enter the Buddha's teaching. If the Tathāgata were to permit women to enter the Buddha's teaching, the sublime Dharma would decline five hundred years earlier; therefore, the Tathāgata is not pleased with women entering the Buddha's teaching." Then Ānanda touched his head to the Buddha's feet, bowed with palms joined, and again addressed the Bhagavān thus: "As I distinctly recall, all past Buddhas were endowed with the fourfold retinue; how could the Buddha Śākyamuni alone not be endowed with the fourfold retinue?" The Buddha replied to Ānanda: "If Gautamī has such faith in the Buddha's Dharma, then let her generate great diligence; if she purely practices the eight dharmas of respect, she is permitted to enter the Buddha's Dharma." Then Ānanda touched his head to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times, and went back out to speak to mother thus: "Having persistently requested the Tathāgata, he has permitted mother to enter the Dharma." "Splendid! It is excellent that Ānanda requested the Tathāgata again and again so that mother's wish came to be fulfilled!" When mother heard from Ānanda that she was permitted to enter the Tathāgata's teaching, she was exceedingly delighted, [saying]: "Today, in this very place, this impermanent body of mine has become a permanent precious body. This life of mine, which shifted and transitioned moment by moment, has today become a precious life. At present, my body, life, and wealth existed merely from a concourse of conditions, but now I have found precious wealth." Having seen such great qualities of benefit and happiness, a mind to pay supreme reverence and honor to Ānanda arose in her, and she spoke to Ānanda thus: "Have no doubts. I shall follow what the Tathāgata intended and proclaimed, and even at the cost of body and life, I will not transgress it." Then the Tathāgata taught in detail the eight dharmas of respect that are not to be transgressed. At that time, driven by the force of great compassion, Mother Gautamī addressed the Bhagavān once again on behalf of all future women: "Venerable Bhagavān, if in future times there are those who have faith and devotion in the Buddha's Dharma, please grant that they too may enter the teaching!" The Bhagavān replied: "Well said! Whatever women guard and uphold the Buddha's Dharma, gradually training in discipline, generosity, extensive learning, and virtuous qualities, are permitted to go forth; and even as laywomen, they are permitted to receive the three refuges, the five constant precepts, and up to the complete discipline, and to enter into the liberations and up to the factors of awakening. If they apply themselves diligently to this, they will attain the three kinds of fruits and will even attain the nirvāṇa of gods and humans." When Gautamī heard what he said, she became exceedingly joyful, satisfied, and glad, and addressed the Bhagavān thus: "That I have attained the fruit is also the kindness of the Buddha. Bhagavān,
