Accordingly, when receiving discipline initially, because there is no limit or measure to saying, 'I will not take the lives of all living beings, I will not take what is not given from all, I will not engage in unchaste conduct with all, and I will not speak any falsehoods,' therefore there is no obtaining discipline that does not pertain to all sentient beings. If the bestowal of discipline is conducted according to the ritual, the Dharma should be explained beforehand so that they comprehend and trust, and they should be caused to generate a mind of loving-kindness and compassion toward all sentient beings. If an exceptionally devout aspiration arises in this way, higher discipline will be obtained. Furthermore, in obtaining discipline, one individually obtains four disciplines from each and every sentient being; when the four disciplines are distinguished individually, they become twelve disciplines. The arising of the four infractions that are the opposite of not taking the lives of sentient beings, not taking what is not given, not engaging in unchaste conduct, and not speaking falsehoods also occurs through three causes and conditions: namely, arising from attachment, arising from aversion, and arising from ignorance. All sentient beings have these twelve non-virtues; when one turns away from these non-virtues, one obtains the twelve material forms of informative discipline that are virtuous. Obtaining them from all immeasurable sentient beings is likewise the same. Even if a million or a hundred million arhats were to pass into nirvāṇa, if one initially received discipline from those arhats, even though the arhats pass into nirvāṇa, one's discipline is not broken. As for the precept of not drinking alcohol, for as long as this body exists from beginning to end, throughout the entire trichiliocosm and as far as it is contained, at every breath one obtains the material form of informative discipline. Because when initially receiving the precept one said, 'I will not drink any alcohol,' even if all alcohol were exhausted, the discipline is ever-present and thus is not broken. He asked:
