"When initially taking the precepts, if one undertakes the precept to not engage in sexual misconduct through the three doors with all women, and later takes a wife, does this discipline become broken?" The Bhagavān replied: "It is not broken. Why is that? Initially one received the precept of not engaging in sexual misconduct with women, and because she is one's wife, it is not sexual misconduct; thus this precept is not broken. When applied to this meaning, everything corresponds; obtaining discipline from the eight precepts, the ten precepts, sentient beings, and non-sentient things is also just like that. Even for the two hundred and fifty disciplines, one obtains seven disciplines respectively from all sentient beings; when those are also analyzed, they become twenty-one disciplines. The seven sins of body and speech arise toward all sentient beings, and the arising of these sins also occurs due to three causes and conditions: namely, arising from attachment, arising from aversion, and arising from ignorance. Thus, seven sins arise from the three causes and conditions, so that three times seven non-virtuous sins makes twenty-one. When one turns away from those sins, it becomes discipline; just as there are twenty-one material forms of informative discipline toward a single sentient being, it is likewise toward all sentient beings. When applied to that meaning, it is appropriate to obtain innumerable disciplines at one time, but they do not break simultaneously at one time, nor do they cease all at once. What is called 'broken discipline' is: if the root of the discipline is broken, one will not advance further and higher; even if one renounces the discipline and receives it later, one will not obtain discipline. For example, if the root of the one-day eight-branch precept is broken, later one is not fit to receive any of the eight precepts, the five precepts, the ten precepts, full ordination, the discipline of dhyāna, the uncorrupted discipline, or any of these disciplines.
