and the uncorrupted discipline are not like that; therefore, it is the most supreme and sublime in the three realms. When initially receiving the precepts, immediately upon performing the motion and the fourfold proclamation, the discipline becomes complete. The material form of informative discipline of that initial, first mind-moment is called 'action', and it is also called 'path of action'. The material form of informative discipline arising from subsequent mind-moments is called 'action', but is not a 'path of action'. Therefore, from the first mind-moment, the material form of informative discipline completes the intention; and because it possesses intention, it is called the 'path of action of intention'. With the former discipline acting as cause, the material form of informative discipline of the remainder is spontaneously established; therefore, it is called 'action', but is not a 'path of action'. The discipline of the single, first mind-moment is accompanied by ritual, and is not without ritual. The discipline that arises gradually later is endowed solely with the non-ritual, and is not accompanied by ritual. The discipline of the single, initial mind-moment is called 'discipline', is called 'virtuous conduct', and is called 'vinaya'. The discipline that arises gradually immediately after that also has that meaning." Then Aniruddha again asked the Bhagavān: "Among the three times, through which time is discipline obtained?" The Bhagavān replied: "Discipline is obtained through the single mind-moment of the present time. The past and the future are dharmas; because they are not sentient beings, one does not obtain discipline [through them], but since the single mind-moment of the present is a sentient being, one obtains discipline [through it]." He asked: "Is discipline obtained through a virtuous mind, through an unvirtuous mind, or through an indeterminate mind, or is discipline obtained through a mindless state?" The Bhagavān replied: "It is obtained through all of them: initially, through a virtuous mind, the virtuous
