having bowed to the feet of the saṅgha, taking the robes and alms bowl, one makes the request to the preceptor. Then, crouching in the squatting posture and pressing the palms together, to completely receive the discipline with a virtuous mind uninterruptedly during the motion with fourfold announcement is called 'obtaining the discipline with a virtuous mind.' If, while sequentially performing the rite in that way, one is constantly endowed with a virtuous mind, yet at the time of performing the motion with fourfold announcement during the formal act, an unvirtuous thought such as attachment or hatred arises, then even though that being is endowed with the informative physical form of the discipline, it is called 'obtaining the discipline with an unvirtuous mind.' Even so, the discipline was obtained through the power of the initial virtuous mind and virtuous act, not by the unvirtuous mind. If previously one performed the ritual act with a virtuous mind, but at the time of performing the motion with fourfold announcement one falls asleep or dozes off, and the informative physical form of the discipline arises from that sleeping or dozing mind, it is called 'obtaining the discipline with an indeterminate mind.' If previously one performed the rite with a virtuous mind, but at the time of performing the motion with fourfold announcement one enters into meditative absorption in cessation, then because one is endowed with the informative physical form of the discipline at that time, it is called 'obtaining the discipline from being mindless.' Aniruddha further asked: 'If a householder directly receives the ten precepts without having received the five precepts, will he obtain the discipline?' The Bhagavān replied: 'He obtains both the discipline of an upāsaka and the discipline of a śramaṇa at one time. If, without having received the five precepts nor having received the ten precepts, one directly receives the complete discipline, then one also obtains all three disciplines at one time.' Aniruddha asked: 'Bhagavān, if all three disciplines are obtained at one time by receiving the complete discipline, what need is there to say that one should receive the five precepts first in sequence, the ten precepts after that, and later'
