life, he took the lion skin, went to that mountain, piled up ox-head sandalwood, and cremated the lion's skin and corpse. Having thus cremated the lion's corpse, he collected the bones, erected a stūpa, and made offerings.

The Bhagavān said to Ānanda: "Noble sons, at that time, during that era, the one known as the lion Dṛḍhapratijña was none other than myself, Śākyamuni today. Therefore, in order to attend upon a spiritual friend, a bodhisattva would rather surrender body and life than generate a sinful mind. Why is that? Because they know kindness and repay kindness. Moreover, how so? Through relying on a spiritual friend, a bodhisattva will swiftly attain unsurpassed, perfectly complete awakening.

"Noble son, a bodhisattva constantly and diligently relies upon a spiritual friend, and in order to crush and diminish the afflictions of the three realms, earnestly strives to listen to the Buddha's teaching down to a single word, a single verse, or a single meaning. Thus, when a bodhisattva single-mindedly seeks the Buddha's scriptures, because they are thoroughly imbued with longing for the Dharma, they do not begrudge even their body and life, but leap across and traverse glowing embers, iron, or the earth, not considering it harmful. If a bodhisattva does not begrudge body and life even for the sake of a few verses, what need to speak of the twelve branches of scripture? If they do not begrudge body and life even for the sake of a single verse, what need to speak of external, material things other than that?

"Through the purpose of hearing the Dharma, body and mind become exceedingly joyful; and because an attitude of profound faith arises, the view of correct understanding is attained. Seeing the Dharma teacher, they feel no pride, just as if beholding their own parents. They listen to the Dharma for the benefit of sentient beings
