treatises of the tirthikas, to know the skills in means for taming sentient beings, and to distinguish between the meaning spoken by the Tathāgata and the conventional meaning of worldly speech, the bodhisattva studies the treatises on logic (hetuvidyā).
"Why does the bodhisattva study the treatises on grammar and linguistics (śabdavidyā)? The bodhisattva studies the treatises on grammar and linguistics in order to ornament words with utter purity, because impure words cannot clearly demonstrate the meaning, in order to know and comprehend all meanings, to remain unbroken by arrogance due to correct words remaining unimpaired, to turn beings away from wrong views, and to know skill in means for taming sentient beings.
"Why does the bodhisattva study the treatises on medicine (cikitsāvidyā)? The bodhisattva studies the treatises on medicine in order to free sentient beings from the one hundred and four unwholesome diseases, to generate faith in sentient beings out of love and tender care for all sentient beings, to give rise to a joyful mind through being freed from sickness in this way, so that by giving rise to such a joyful mind they may constantly be mindful of the Buddha, and in order to bring sentient beings to the other shore through great compassion.
"Why does the bodhisattva study worldly crafts (śilpakarmasthānavidyā)? In order to benefit sentient beings, to inspire faith in sentient beings through the ease of acquiring material goods, to crush arrogance through knowing all aspects of worldly arts and activities, to tame sentient beings, and to dispel all obscurations caused by worldly things, the bodhisattva studies the sciences of the arts and crafts."
