If a bodhisattva does not train in the five sciences, they will never be able to attain the omniscient gnosis of unsurpassed, perfect awakening. Therefore, in order to attain unsurpassed awakening, one should train in the five sciences. A bodhisattva who recognizes kindness and repays kindness will expound and teach to sentient beings the matters to be expounded. How are they expounded? In order to attain unsurpassed, perfect awakening, they are expounded possessed of the five sciences. Moreover, expounding has two aspects: gradual exposition and pure exposition. In that regard, what is gradual exposition? It is first expounding the perfection of generosity, and subsequently expounding up through the perfection of insight; and, for the sake of recognizing kindness and repaying kindness, bringing the meaning to mind and abiding in accord with the Dharma—this is called 'gradual exposition.' In that regard, what is called 'pure exposition'? If the listener is seated while the expounder is standing, it should not be expounded to them. If the listener seeks faults in the Dharma or seeks faults in the expounder, it should not be expounded to them. If the listener relies on the person and not on the Dharma, because they do not rely on the Dharma, it should not be expounded to them. If the listener relies on the letter and not on the meaning, it should not be expounded, up through if they rely on the provisional meaning and do not rely on the definitive meaning, it should not be expounded. Why is that? Because such a person has no respect for the pure Dharma of the buddhas and bodhisattvas. If the one who expounds and teaches also pays reverence to the Dharma, and whatever listener of the Dharma listens single-pointedly with a respectful mind, free from any mind of conceit, this is called 'pure exposition.' Furthermore, what is called 'gradual exposition' is expounding everything. What
