When a man's fortune turns dark, / he does only what will be of no use to him.
One day the king's heart was drawn toward hunting, and he turned the rein of resolve toward the hunting ground.
He arrived at the far shore of a water's edge, which was a gathering place of wild beasts and an abode of birds, and boundless game and predators had made their dwelling in that place.
The king, accompanied by the vizier, mounted the back of a wind-paced, fleet-footed black steed, which, out of extreme speed,
would outstrip future days while running, and when the reins were pulled, would overtake past time in the twinkling of an eye;
its swift pace was to such an extent that if it galloped over a sleeper's eye, it would not dispel the sweetness of sweet slumber from him;
and if it directed its course upon the sharpness of a sword, it would cross safely like the saints across the bridge of Ṣirāṭ;
downward it hastened like heavenly decree, and upward it ascended without pause like an answered prayer.
He mounted it. Verse:
