The blossoms of the stars in the highest sky draw near from a […] wherein the two luminaries are hidden.
The stature of the cypress on the stream's edge was imagined like the reflection of the beloved's figure in the water of a lover's eyes;
the plane tree, for the garden's lasting enjoyment, raised its hands in prayer from the branch of its youth; the lily opened
ten tongues in praise of the lawn; in every corner the violet's stature was bent like a bow, and on every side the height
of the pine stood upright; the nightingale renewed its ancient love with the rose, and the ailing morning breeze clothed the bodies of love's sick with
the garment of health; the branches of the dark aloe-wood tree, without the mediation of proximity to fire, perfumed the palate of the soul like ascetics;
and the fragrant sandalwood tree, by the requirement of its nature, drew the buzzing of the celestial sphere from the basket of heaven toward itself; the world-experienced and world-traveled sphere had become all
eyes in beholding all that, and also, out of fairness, revolved around the heads of the fresh-faced new brides of the lawn; and
also from extreme wonder in contemplating the leaves of fragrant herbs and trees laden with fruit, its head was spinning; the tulip held
a ruby goblet in hand, breaking the hundred-year repentance of ascetics and men of purity like glass against stone; and
the fresh, emerald-formed verdure demonstrated to people with ocular certainty the truth of the meaning of “Looking at greenery increases eyesight”
and blinded the eye of the viper; and in the courtyard of that garden they had laid a watery carpet of clear, lustrous crystal,
such that from its elegance and purity the loveliness and beauty of the garden appeared doubled, and to the spectators it seemed
as though the divers of the sea of wisdom, out of supreme craft and the peak of wisdom, had planted various fragrant herbs and
varieties of trees upon the face of the water, or, by the aid of the overflowing intellect and darkness-dispelling mind, had bestowed
the purity and brightness of subtle water upon the dense substance of earth; and near that garden was a palace loftier than the Arch of Khusraw,
with designs of the magic-working reed of Mānī upon its doors and walls:
And it is as if the lofty palace was perfected by David out of the nature of firm iron,
