“If I speak of the state of my heart’s ache, / since there is no one who will have pity on my state,
When destiny closed the door of hope in my face, / if the whole world stands aside, nothing will open.
Everyone has so turned their face from me that if / I look in the mirror, it does not show my face.
O sphere, cast a fire into this soul of mine, / for the beloved is gone, and [breath] still enters the body.
The night has become pregnant so that each day / it may give birth to a fresh sorrow for my soul.
From the tyranny of heaven, which made my day black as night, / it would be fitting if I wore a robe of paper like the morning.
May the foundation of the celestial sphere be ruined by the wave of annihilation, / for no comfort comes from it to any heart!
The story of our state, like the night of separation, has no end, and like the Day of Resurrection is far and long. The overwhelming
longing to behold the familiar countenance of that travel-bound companion, and the excessive desire to be near the beloved sight of that
covenant-breaking beloved, snatches the reins of writing from the fingertips of the pen and twists the hand of fine eloquence and exposition.
And if from time to time the wish arises that, by presenting some burning griefs and a breath of the varieties of yearning
by way of spitting blood, with an effort I might make it manifest for the expansion of the inner self, and by mentioning a portion of the crowd
and assault of the black woes that have pitched tents and encamped in the courtyard of my breast, I might unburden my heart, the pen and
the tongue advance with definitive arguments, clap their hands in front of their faces, and clinging and holding fast
to the hem of utter helplessness and distress, they say: ‘Since no shore is apparent for the sea, and no end for this open plain,
observing the requirement of swimming and traversing the path of travel in this can be nothing but seeking [calamity] and unanimous impossibility and
imposing the unbearable. Your temperament, through the alternation of the vicissitudes of separation and the assault of the accidents of deprivation, has deviated from the highway
