The army of grief assaulted the center of my heart at every moment and carried off the treasure of patience as plunder and spoil, and the pupil of the eye
from both eyes watered the sapling of his love anew at every blinking of an eye. Each time the Joseph of the world-illuminating sun
raised his head from the well of the darkness of night and displayed his world-adorning cheek to the sight of the people of the world,
and whenever the Laylī of night unloosed her musk-colored tresses and displayed the fixed stars and planets like the tears
of Majnūn's eye to the eyes of all beings, I, like Zulaykhā, wounded my pale face and pain-filled breast with the scratch of fingernails
and made them covered in blood, and tore the collar of patience to pieces like the shirt of Joseph; and
the prince, acting like Majnūn, poured out his heart's blood through the springs of his eyes, and after the manner of
madmen gave the capital of honor and reputation to the wind, placed his dear soul on his palm, let forth heart-searing sighs from a breast full of fire
and eyes full of tears, and placed the dust of my lane upon his head like a crown. When matters reached the soul and
the knife reached the bone, and the truth began to appear and everyone became aware and informed of this secret,
we said to one another: ‘The foundation of love has attained complete firmness, and the tree of affection has reached its perfection
and brought forth branches and leaves, and has come to be qualified by the attribute “its root is firm and its branches are in the sky.” What
stratagem shall we devise so that the evil eye of rivals may not take effect against us and seditious fortune may not open the door of tyranny and cruelty, and
[how can we protect our state from adversity]?’
and what remedy can we devise so that, like light with the sun and accident with substance, we may ever attend one another, and like color
from wine and fragrance from the rose, we may by no means be parted? We have indeed given up our heart from precious life, and have counted ourselves
slain by the sword of love and disgraced in the lane of affection; but we must spend our life together in sorrow and joy,
and from the hand of the cupbearer of destiny drink the cup of mourning and banquet in a single assembly, for our feeble body
cannot endure the burden of separation, and by no device does fleeting patience make peace with us. If every day from the body of the separated lover
they cut off a particle of flesh, and moment by moment scatter fresh salt upon it, and like the candle of the bedside
burn it from head to foot, he would deem endurance of these diverse afflictions and ever-increasing griefs, in comparison to the vision
of his beloved that increases the soul, the very essence of pleasure and pure gladness, and would consider that boundless wound
the comfort of his heart and soul. And if for one burned by the fire of separation they should make a lodging and dwelling of the gardens of the highest Paradise,
and the houris should moisten the sapling of his nature with a handful of the water of Kawthar and Tasnīm, without the beauty of the delicate beloved
he would deem himself bound in fiery chains in the lowest depths of Hell, and like a fish that in the days of Tammuz, through the effect of the turning
