had gained knowledge of this distressed state, or an unfeeling rival had received news of this troubled condition; although
I care not a hair's breadth for disgrace and ruin, nor do I grieve at becoming notorious in the business of love, yet
this must not reach the ears of my father and mother and estrange me from the joy of my aim and the pursuit of my beloved.
[My eye] fell upon a rose sapling; when I looked closely at it, I saw the prince waiting for me with his eyes fixed upon the road,
like a narcissus having become all eyes, and like a newly blossomed bud concealed among its petals from
all unkind rivals, shedding lustrous pearls of tears from the oyster shell of his eyes onto his skirt, and stringing his eyelashes
like a thread with pearls; and the ambuscades of the pain of separation had vanquished and overcome the vanguards of his patience and endurance,
and the army of sorrow had plundered and pillaged the treasure of his joy from the treasury of his breast. At
the attainment of this felicity and arrival at this good fortune, I performed a prostration of gratitude, and to the dead body
I sent the glad tidings of the arrival of the soul-reviver, and drew near to the prince. Such bewilderment overcame us both
that the pearl-scattering tongue, like the tongue of the lily, remained bare and bereft of the adornment of speech, and the body, like
a painted figure upon a wall, was deprived of motion and stir; and the afflicted heart counted this state among
sweet, joy-giving dreams, and the soul recited the sense of “Do we see a dream, or a new era?”:
