When the assembly of those present beheld this manner [of state], and saw the hand of love's bailiff clinging to the collar of his soul,
and knew in truth that love's unerring arrow had struck the target of his heart, and the wound of the head-severing sword
had landed effectively upon the neck of his intellect, they all became tongue-tied like an arrow notch, and from the extremity of bewilderment and
distress their mouths remained agape, and in the manner of a sword from head to foot they were steeped in the tempered water of grief and sorrow.
They stretched out their tongues like lances in reviling and reproaching the adversity of treacherous time, and with a hundred thousand soul-melting thoughts
and life-diminishing sorrow, with hearts like censers full of fire and eyes like clouds raining pearls,
they returned to their dwellings. The king summoned the minister, recited to him what was hidden in his conscience,
and said, “By overwhelming destiny, easily can an unerring arrow pass straight through the armor of a thousand Aristotles’ deliberation;
such a state has befallen me, and such an affliction has descended into the courtyard of my mind.
Now I entrust the reins of all affairs of state to the hand of your excellent competence and consummate wisdom, and I myself go
in pursuit of the objective. If good fortune soon assists me, ‘then this is the objective,’ and I shall return,
and having attained my heart's desire, I shall occupy myself with executing royal commands and deliberating world-conquest and universal victory; and
if not, I shall take to the road of the mountains and the desert.”
