"In understanding it there is knowledge, and in its dispersion there is occupation away from slandering people;
It distracts the lover from his love, and the possessor of the cup from the cup;
By its strategy, the warrior is guided in times of hardship and valor;
And its adepts, owing to their fine manners, are among the best of companions and intimates."
The prince rose respectfully to his feet, opened his tongue to fulfill the duties of gratitude for favors, and said: 'Whatever
the supreme judgment demands, humans and spirits consider obedience and submission to it obligatory with heart and soul, and like reed-pens all place their heads upon the line of obedience.'
The king commanded flagons of delicious wine and an ingeniously fashioned chess-set to be brought forward.
When they drank a heavy measure or two from the hands of light-spirited cupbearers, the veil of formality was lifted from between them,
and the carpet of cheerfulness was spread. The prince made effort to play chess with the king of celestial station.
The king and the prince arrayed the ranks of chess pieces across the battlefield of the board,
and faced each other to drive them forward. Each dashed the steed of endeavor into the arena to parry the moves of his opponent;

and the prince fell into the corner of checkmate. Like a mirror before the legs of the throne
of sovereignty, the prince stood respectfully on one foot, scattered jewels of praise and encomium greater than the doubled squares of the chessboard,
and said: 'By Him who seated you in this seat of honor, I was never the master of this game, but you are the one for whom the game was won.'
And he clarified the state of affairs to the king's mind in pleasing phrase and delightful explanation, saying:
'Since God the Exalted has adorned the banners of imperial fortune with the embroidery of conquest and victory, in all stations,
whether of earnest endeavor or of play, mastery, victory, and supremacy attend your auspicious essence; triumph and success
attend your peerless nature just as light and brilliance attend the sun; the bird of triumph and victory perches on your head, and the visitor of prosperity resides at your door.
For the wager of this, I know nothing other than precious life, and I regard this as a mere trifle'
paltry capital and a trifling merchandise, and have brought it forward to attain honor and pride.” The king said, “This
