3.53
If a sentence, even when devoted to an effect where another means of valid cognition is impossible, is dependent because of its connection with a person, then by positive and negative concomitance, being preceded by human intellect alone is the cause of dependence on another means of valid cognition. For when it is present, there is dependence in secular speech; and when it is absent, there is independence in the Veda. The possibility of another means of valid cognition regarding the object is not the cause, because even in its absence, dependence is observed in a secular injunction.
