[Objection:] Since a mental state of nacre and the like produced by the eye and the like has qualifiers, it does not have unqualitied pure consciousness as its object; and thus, even if it does not overcome the primal ignorance that is its concealment, it is reasonable that, having a conditioned object, it overcomes the secondary ignorance that is the concealment of conditioned consciousness—this view of yours is incorrect. For in what is conditioned, which is fabricated by ignorance and whose illumination is not otherwise in question, neither primal ignorance nor its concealing power is possible, and it is not accepted by you. And if that is accepted with respect to the Self qualified by the insentient, then, since the overcoming of a power concealing the qualified without concealing the qualifier is impossible without the overcoming of the power concealing the qualificand, pure consciousness itself would entail being revealed by a mental state having the form of nacre.

[Reply:] This is not so, due to a lack of understanding. For neither ignorance nor its power is accepted by us in what is conditioned and fabricated by ignorance; rather, only in pure consciousness. But since everything insentient is superimposed upon that, by virtue of the relation of residing in the same substratum, there is the conventional expression: "consciousness conditioned by the insentient is concealed." When the consciousness that is its substratum is revealed by a mental state having the form of a pot or the like, however, the overcoming of the concealment residing in it occurs only in delimitation by that; hence there is no entailment of the manifestation of the pure Self. As it is said in the *Saṃkṣepaśārīraka*:
