[Objection:] On the view of a single ignorance, through the knowledge of nacre only the dissolution of silver and the like into its own cause is effected, like that of a pot by the blow of a mallet; but ignorance is not removed—this view of yours is not tenable. For by the force of the invariable concomitance that knowledge removes only ignorance, knowledge opposes anything else only through the removal of ignorance, and hence it is impossible for it to remove silver and the like without removing ignorance. And if ignorance were not removed by the knowledge of nacre, then, due to the absence of relation with revealed consciousness, nacre would not be manifest at the time of sublation just as during illusion.

[Reply:] This is not so. For the invariable concomitance that knowledge removes ignorance pertains to total destruction, whereas that is not accepted when [an effect] remains in a subtle form within its own cause. And although the knowledge of nacre does not remove the primal ignorance which conceals unconditioned consciousness, it removes the secondary ignorance which conceals conditioned consciousness; hence, through relation with revealed consciousness, both the removal of silver and the manifestation of nacre are established at the time of sublation. And it cannot be said that the overcoming of ignorance, which is the material cause, by a mental state, which is an effect, is impossible because an effect is never seen to overcome its material cause; for a scorpion and the like are indeed seen to overcome cow dung and the like, which are their material cause. And since the theory of original production is not accepted, there is no suspicion that parts of the cow dung are the material cause.
