ityatra lakṣaṇayā'haṅkāraśabdaḥ ātmanīti. yattu ahamarthe ātmānātmadharmadarśanamasiddham, kartṛtvāderātmadharmatvād- iti. tatra kartṛtvāderanātmadharmatvaṃ yathā tathā vakṣyāmaḥ. nanu- anātmadharmatve'pi kartṛtvādestadāśrayasyābhāne'pi kartṛtvādikamātmani bhāsatām, `gauro'ha'mityatra śarīragatagauratvamiveti cenna, dṛṣṭāntāsampratipatteḥ, tatrāpi dehatvenābhāne'pi gauratvamanuṣyatvādinā tatpratīteḥ.

in such passages, the word 'ego-maker' (ahaṅkāra) is applied to the Self by metaphorical extension (lakṣaṇā). As for the claim: "The perception of the attributes of both Self and non-Self in the referent of 'I' is unestablished, because agency and the like are attributes of the Self"—we shall explain later how agency and the like are attributes of the non-Self. Objection: Even if agency and the like are attributes of the non-Self, let agency and the like appear in the Self even without the appearance of their substratum, just like the fairness residing in the body [appears in the Self] in "I am fair"? Reply: No, because the example is not admitted, for there too, even if it does not appear under the aspect of the body, it is perceived as fair, human, and so on.
