trividhā cāsya śāstrasya pravṛttiḥ, --- uddeśo lakṣaṇaṃ parīkṣā ceti/ tatra nāmadheyena padārthamātrasyābhidhānam uddśaḥ/

And the procedure of this treatise is threefold: enunciation, definition, and critical examination. Among these, enunciation is the statement of a mere category by name.
