The teacher Jaimini considers that in ‘There are three branches of duty...’ and so on, there is no injunction—no prescription—of those stages of life, and that it is a reference—a restatement—for the purpose of praising meditation. Moreover, scripture certainly censures the other stages of life, as in: ‘He is a killer of the gods who extinguishes the fire.’ Therefore, they do not exist at all.
