At that time, at that moment, up to [Gautama] spoke thus: “Venerable Sir, would a god of great supernatural power, up to of great majesty, after falling [from heaven], immediately be reborn as a two-bodied snake?”
“Yes, he would be reborn.”
“Would he be revered, bowed to, worshipped, honoured, respected there, divine, true, bringing true benefit, endowed with attending marvels?”
“Yes, he would be.”
“Venerable Sir, after departing immediately from there, would he attain perfection, up to make an end of all suffering?”
“Yes, he would attain perfection, up to make an end of all suffering.”
“Venerable Sir, would a god of great supernatural power, up to of great majesty, after falling [from heaven], immediately be reborn as a two-bodied jewel?”
“Yes, he would be reborn. Exactly the same as with the snakes.”
“Venerable Sir, would a god of great supernatural power, up to of great majesty, after falling [from heaven], immediately be reborn as a two-bodied tree?”
“Yes, he would be reborn. Exactly the same, with this difference only: up to endowed with attending marvels, and his base smeared and worshipped?”
“Yes, he would be. The rest is the very same, up to make an end of all suffering.”

“Now, Venerable Sir, the bull-monkey, the bull-cock, the bull-frog—having no moral conduct, no vows, no virtues, no restraint, without renunciation and fasting on the posadha, when their time has come, upon dying, would they be reborn as hell-beings in this Ratnaprabhā earth in a hell with a maximum lifespan duration of a sāgaropama?”
The ascetic Lord Mahāvīra replied: “Being in the process of rebirth, it may be said that they have been reborn.”
“Now, Venerable Sir, the lion, tiger, wolf, leopard, bear, hyena, wild dog—having no moral conduct, no vows, no virtues, no restraint, without renunciation and fasting on the posadha, when their time has come, upon dying, would they be reborn as hell-beings in this Ratnaprabhā earth in a hell with a maximum lifespan duration of a sāgaropama?”
The ascetic Lord Mahāvīra replied: “Being in the process of rebirth, it may be said that they have been reborn.”
“Now, Venerable Sir, the vulture, crow, cat, ram, peacock—having no moral conduct, no vows, no virtues, no restraint, without renunciation and fasting on the posadha, when their time has come, upon dying, would they be reborn as hell-beings in this Ratnaprabhā earth in a hell with a maximum lifespan duration of a sāgaropama?”
The ascetic Lord Mahāvīra replied: “Being in the process of rebirth, it may be said that they have been reborn.”
“So it is, Venerable Sir! So it is, Venerable Sir!” up to [Gautama] continues to dwell.
