aha bhaṃte! gonaṃgūlavasabhe, kukkuḍavasabhe, maṃḍukkavasabhe–ee ṇaṃ nissīlā nivvayā nigguṇā nimmerā nippaccakkhāṇa-posahovavāsā kālamāse kālaṃ kiccā imīse rayaṇappabhāe puḍhavīe ukkosaṃ sāgarovamaṭṭhitīyaṃsi naragaṃsi neraiyattāe uvavajjejjā?
samaṇe bhagavaṃ mahāvīre vāgarei–uvavajjamāṇe uvavanne tti vattavvaṃ siyā|
aha bhaṃte! sīhe vagghe, vage, dīvie acche, taracche, parassare–ee ṇaṃ nissīlā nivvayā nigguṇā nimmerā nippa-ccakkhāṇa-posahovavāsā kālamāse kālaṃ kiccā imīse rayaṇappabhāe puḍhavīe ukkosaṃ sāgarovamaṭṭhitīyaṃsi naragaṃsi neraiyattāe uvavajjejjā?
samaṇe bhagavaṃ mahāvīre vāgarei–uvavajjamāṇe uvavanne tti vattavvaṃ siyā|
aha bhaṃte! ḍhaṃke ḍhaṃke vilae maddue sikhī–ee ṇaṃ nissīlā nivvayā nigguṇā nimmerā nippaccakkhāṇa-posahovavāsā kālamāse kālaṃ kiccā imīse rayaṇappabhāe puḍhavīe ukkosaṃ sāgarovamaṭṭhitīyaṃsi naragaṃsi neraiyattāe uvavajjejjā?
samaṇe bhagavaṃ mahāvīre vāgarei–uvavajjamāṇe uvavanne tti vattavvaṃ siyā|
sevaṃ bhaṃte! sevaṃ bhaṃte! tti jāva viharai|

“Now, Venerable Sir, the bull-monkey, the bull-cock, the bull-frog—having no moral conduct, no vows, no virtues, no restraint, without renunciation and fasting on the posadha, when their time has come, upon dying, would they be reborn as hell-beings in this Ratnaprabhā earth in a hell with a maximum lifespan duration of a sāgaropama?”
The ascetic Lord Mahāvīra replied: “Being in the process of rebirth, it may be said that they have been reborn.”
“Now, Venerable Sir, the lion, tiger, wolf, leopard, bear, hyena, wild dog—having no moral conduct, no vows, no virtues, no restraint, without renunciation and fasting on the posadha, when their time has come, upon dying, would they be reborn as hell-beings in this Ratnaprabhā earth in a hell with a maximum lifespan duration of a sāgaropama?”
The ascetic Lord Mahāvīra replied: “Being in the process of rebirth, it may be said that they have been reborn.”
“Now, Venerable Sir, the vulture, crow, cat, ram, peacock—having no moral conduct, no vows, no virtues, no restraint, without renunciation and fasting on the posadha, when their time has come, upon dying, would they be reborn as hell-beings in this Ratnaprabhā earth in a hell with a maximum lifespan duration of a sāgaropama?”
The ascetic Lord Mahāvīra replied: “Being in the process of rebirth, it may be said that they have been reborn.”
“So it is, Venerable Sir! So it is, Venerable Sir!” up to [Gautama] continues to dwell.
