"What kind [of substances], Venerable Sir, do these jīvas inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out?"
"Gautama, in terms of substance, substances of infinite spatial units; in terms of area, occupying innumerable spatial units; in terms of time, having one or another duration; in terms of state, possessing color, possessing odor, possessing taste, possessing touch, do they inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out."
"Those which, in terms of state, possess color, which they inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out—do they inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out those of a single color, up to: those of five colors?"
"Gautama, considering their general classification, they inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out even those of a single color, up to: even those of five colors. Considering their specific division, they inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out even black-colored ones, up to: even white-colored ones.
The section on nourishment is to be applied, up to:
In which directions, Venerable Sir, do earth-bodied [souls] inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out?"
"Gautama, unobstructed, from six directions; in the case of obstruction, sometimes from three directions, sometimes from four directions, sometimes from five directions."
"What kind [of substances], Venerable Sir, do inhabitants of hell inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out?"
"The same [as before], up to: invariably from six directions do they inhale, exhale, breathe in, or breathe out.
General jīvas and one-sensed [souls] are to be spoken of with obstruction and non-obstruction. The rest [take them] invariably from six directions."
