"How many, Venerable Sir, are the sense organs proclaimed to be?"
"Gautama, five sense organs are proclaimed, namely: 1. the auditory sense organ, 2. the visual sense organ, 3. the olfactory sense organ, 4. the gustatory sense organ, 5. the tactile sense organ." The first uddeśaka on sense organs is to be understood up to:
"Venerable Sir, by what is non-space pervaded? Or by how many bodies is it pervaded?"
"Gautama, it is not pervaded by the substance of dharma up to it is not pervaded by the substance of space; it is pervaded by a portion of the substance of space, it is pervaded by space-points of the substance of space; it is not pervaded by earth-bodied beings up to it is not pervaded by time-moments; [it is pervaded by] a single portion of non-living substance that is neither heavy nor light, endowed with infinite neither-heavy-nor-light qualities, occupying all space less an infinitesimal fraction."
