"Gautama, jīvas have terminable lifespans as well as interminable lifespans."
[Regarding] inhabitants of hell, the question [is repeated].
"Gautama, inhabitants of hell do not have terminable lifespans; they have interminable lifespans. In this way up to the Stanitakumāras. Earth-bodied beings are like jīvas. In this way up to humans. The Vyantaras, Jyotiṣkas, and Vaimānikas are like inhabitants of hell."

"Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell reborn by self-assault, are they reborn by assault by others, or are they reborn without assault?"
"Gautama, they are reborn by self-assault, they are also reborn by assault by others, and they are also reborn without assault. In this way up to the Vaimānikas."
"Venerable Sir, do inhabitants of hell depart by self-assault, do they depart by assault by others, or do they depart without assault?"
"Gautama, they do not depart by self-assault, nor do they depart by assault by others; they depart without assault. In this way up to the Stanitakumāras. Earth-bodied beings up to humans depart in all three ways. The rest are like inhabitants of hell, with the only difference being that Jyotiṣkas and Vaimānikas fall."
"Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell reborn through their own miraculous power or through the miraculous power of others?"
"Gautama, they are reborn through their own miraculous power, not through the miraculous power of others. In this way up to the Vaimānikas."

"Gautama, they are reborn through their own karma, not through the karma of others. In this way up to the Vaimānikas."
Likewise the series concerning departing.
"Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell reborn through their own application or through the application of others?"
"Gautama, they are reborn through their own application, not through the application of others. In this way up to the Vaimānikas." Likewise the series concerning departing.

"Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell accumulated by countable plurality, accumulated by uncountable plurality, or accumulated inexpressibly?"
"Gautama, inhabitants of hell are accumulated by countable plurality, accumulated by uncountable plurality, and also accumulated inexpressibly."
"For what reason, [Venerable Sir, is it said] up to 'accumulated inexpressibly'?"
"Gautama, those inhabitants of hell who enter by an entrance of a countable number are accumulated by countable plurality; those inhabitants of hell who enter by an entrance of an uncountable number are accumulated by uncountable plurality; and those inhabitants of hell who enter by an entrance of one are accumulated inexpressibly. For that reason, Gautama, [it is said] up to 'and also accumulated inexpressibly'. Thus up to Stanitakumāras."
[As for] earth-bodied beings, the question [is repeated].
"Gautama, earth-bodied beings are not accumulated by countable plurality; they are accumulated by uncountable plurality; they are not accumulated inexpressibly."
"For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said up to 'they are not accumulated inexpressibly'?"
"Gautama, earth-bodied beings enter by an entrance of an uncountable number. For that reason [it is said] up to 'they are not accumulated inexpressibly'. Thus up to plant-bodied beings. Two-sensed beings up to Vaimānikas are like inhabitants of hell."
[As for] liberated souls, the question [is repeated]. "Gautama, liberated souls are accumulated by countable plurality, not accumulated by uncountable plurality, and also accumulated inexpressibly."
"For what reason, [Venerable Sir, is it said] up to 'and also accumulated inexpressibly'?"
"Gautama, those liberated souls who enter by an entrance of a countable number are accumulated by countable plurality; those liberated souls who enter by an entrance of one are accumulated inexpressibly. For that reason [it is said] up to 'and also accumulated inexpressibly'."
"Among these inhabitants of hell, Venerable Sir, who are accumulated by countable plurality, accumulated by uncountable plurality, and accumulated inexpressibly, which are fewer, more, equal, or specifically greater compared to which?"
"Gautama, least of all are the inhabitants of hell accumulated inexpressibly; those accumulated by countable plurality are countably-fold; those accumulated by uncountable plurality are uncountably-fold. Thus is the comparative proportion up to Vaimānikas, excluding one-sensed beings. For one-sensed beings there is no comparative proportion."
"Among these liberated souls, Venerable Sir, who are accumulated by countable plurality and accumulated inexpressibly, which are fewer, more, equal, or specifically greater compared to which?"
"Gautama, least of all are the liberated souls accumulated by countable plurality; those accumulated inexpressibly are countably-fold."
"Venerable Sir, are inhabitants of hell sextet-assembled, non-sextet-assembled, assembled by a sextet and a non-sextet, assembled by sextets, or assembled by sextets and a non-sextet?"
"Gautama, inhabitants of hell are sextet-assembled, non-sextet-assembled, assembled by a sextet and a non-sextet, assembled by sextets, and also assembled by sextets and a non-sextet."
"For what reason, Venerable Sir, is it said: 'Inhabitants of hell are sextet-assembled' up to 'and also assembled by sextets and a non-sextet'?"
"Gautama, those inhabitants of hell who enter by an entrance of a sextet are sextet-assembled. Those inhabitants of hell who enter at minimum by [an entrance of] one, two, or three, [and] at maximum by an entrance of five, are non-sextet-assembled. Those inhabitants of hell who enter by one sextet and another [entrance] of minimum one, two, or three, [and] at maximum by an entrance of five, are assembled by a sextet and a non-sextet. Those inhabitants of hell who enter by entrances of multiple sextets are assembled by sextets. Those inhabitants of hell who enter by multiple sextets and another [entrance] of minimum one, two, or three, [and] at maximum by an entrance of five, are assembled by sextets and a non-sextet. For that reason that same [statement holds], up to 'and also assembled [by sextets and a non-sextet]'. Thus up to Stanitakumāras."
[As for] earth-bodied beings, the question [is repeated].
"Gautama, earth-bodied beings are not sextet-assembled, not non-sextet-assembled, not assembled by a sextet and a non-sextet; they are assembled by sextets, and also assembled by sextets and a non-sextet."

"Gautama, inhabitants of hell are duodecad-assembled, up to and also assembled by duodecads and a non-duodecad."

Those inhabitants of hell who enter by entrances of multiple eighty-fours are assembled by eighty-fours. Those inhabitants of hell who enter by multiple eighty-fours and another [entrance] of minimum one, two, or three, [and] at maximum by an entrance of eighty-three, are assembled by eighty-fours and non-eighty-four. For that reason [it is said] up to 'and also assembled'. Thus up to Stanitakumāras. Earth-bodied beings likewise have the latter two [alternatives], with the only difference being the phrasing 'eighty-four'. Thus up to plant-bodied beings. Two-sensed beings up to Vaimānikas are like inhabitants of hell."
[As for] liberated souls, the question [is repeated].
"Gautama, liberated souls are eighty-four-assembled, non-eighty-four-assembled, and assembled by eighty-four and non-eighty-four; they are not assembled by eighty-fours, nor are they assembled by eighty-fours and non-eighty-four."
"For what reason [is it said] up to 'assembled'?"
"Gautama, those liberated souls who enter by an entrance of eighty-four are eighty-four-assembled. Those liberated souls who enter at minimum by [an entrance of] one, two, or three, [and] at maximum by an entrance of eighty-three, are non-eighty-four-assembled. Those liberated souls who enter by eighty-four and another [entrance] of minimum one, two, or three, [and] at maximum by an entrance of eighty-three, are assembled by eighty-four and non-eighty-four. For that reason [it is said] up to 'assembled'."
"Among these inhabitants of hell, Venerable Sir, who are eighty-four-assembled [and] non-eighty-four-assembled—the comparative proportion of all of them is just as for those who are sextet-assembled, up to Vaimānikas, with the only difference being the phrasing 'eighty-four'."
"Among these liberated souls, Venerable Sir, who are eighty-four-assembled, non-eighty-four-assembled, and assembled by eighty-four and non-eighty-four, which are fewer, more, equal, or specifically greater compared to which?"
"Gautama, least of all are the liberated souls assembled by eighty-four and non-eighty-four; those who are eighty-four-assembled are infinitely-fold; those who are non-eighty-four-assembled are infinitely-fold."
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!" [said Gautama], and up to he continues to abide.
