In Rājagṛha up to: he spoke thus: "Now, Venerable Sir, the souls that transition into the roots of these, namely, sāli rice, vīhi rice, godhūma wheat, java barley, and javajava—from where, Venerable Sir, do those souls take birth? Do they take birth from hell-beings? Do they take birth from animals? Do they take birth from humans? Do they take birth from gods?" As in the transition section, so is the rebirth, except excluding gods. "Venerable Sir, how many of those souls take birth in a single moment?" "Gautama, at minimum one, two, or three; at maximum, numerable or innumerable take birth." Removal is as in the Utpala uddeśaka. "Venerable Sir, how great is the physical embodiment declared to be for those souls?" "Gautama, at minimum an innumerable fraction of an aṅgula; at maximum, a few dhanuṣas." "Venerable Sir, are those souls binders of knowledge-obscuring karma, or non-binders?" As in the Utpala uddeśaka. So also for experiencing, rise, and premature activation. "Venerable Sir, do those souls have black lesyā, blue lesyā, or grey lesyā?" There are twenty-six alternatives; worldview up to sense organs are as in the Utpala uddeśaka. "Venerable Sir, how long does the life of those souls in the root of sāli, vīhi, godhūma, java, and javajavaka last in terms of time?" "Gautama, at minimum an antarmuhūrta; at maximum, an innumerable time." "Venerable Sir, how long would that soul in the root of sāli, vīhi, godhūma, java, and javajavaka, [having become] an earth-body soul, dwell again as a soul in the root of sāli, vīhi, java, and javajavaka? How long would it make going and coming?" Thus as in the Utpala uddeśaka. In this manner of expression, up to human soul; nourishment is as in the Utpala uddeśaka; lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, at maximum a few years; samudghātas, experiencing at death, and rising from death are as in the Utpala uddeśaka. "Now, Venerable Sir, have all breath-possessing beings up to all living beings previously been born as souls in the roots of sāli, vīhi, godhūma, java, and javajava?" "Yes, Gautama, many times or infinitely many times." "So it is, Venerable Sir! So it is, Venerable Sir!"
