“Venerable Sir, from where do earth-bodied beings take birth? Do they take birth from hell-beings, or from animal-born beings, humans, or deities?”
“Gautama, they do not take birth from hell-beings; they take birth from animal-born beings, humans, and deities.”
“If they take birth from animal-born beings, do they take birth from one-sensed animal-born beings?”—thus just as birth was expounded in the section on descent, up to: “If they take birth from gross earth-bodied one-sensed animal-born beings, do they take birth as developable gross [earth-bodied beings] up to developable gross earth[-bodied beings] or undevelopable gross earth[-bodied beings]?”
“Gautama, they take birth as developable gross earth[-bodied beings], or as undevelopable gross earth[-bodied beings], up to taking birth.”
“Venerable Sir, if an earth-bodied being is capable of taking birth among earth-bodied beings, with what lifespan duration would it take birth, Venerable Sir?”
“Gautama, at minimum it would take birth with a lifespan duration of an antarmuhūrta; at maximum, with a lifespan duration of twenty-two thousand years.”
“Venerable Sir, in one instant, how many such souls [take birth]?”—question.
“Gautama, every instant, unceasingly, innumerable [souls] take birth. They possess the chevaṭṭha consolidation. Their bodily extension is at minimum an innumerable part of a finger's breadth, and at maximum also an innumerable part of a finger's breadth. They are lentil- or moon-shaped in form. They have four lesyās. They are not right-viewed, they are wrong-viewed, not of mixed right-and-wrong view. They are not knowledgeable, they are ignorant, having by necessity two types of ignorance. They are not endowed with mind-action, nor with speech-action, but with body-action. They have both kinds of consciousness. They have four instincts. They have four passions. One sense-organ is expounded, namely the sense of touch. They undergo three eruptions. Pain is of two kinds. They do not experience female gender, nor male gender, but experience neuter gender. Lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, at maximum twenty-two thousand years. Their mental dispositions are both praiseworthy and unpraiseworthy. The karmic continuance corresponds to their lifespan duration.”
“Venerable Sir, for how long may that earth-bodied being abide repeatedly as an earth-bodied being? For how long may it transmigrate back and forth?”
“Gautama, in terms of lifespans, at minimum it takes two rebirths, and at maximum innumerable rebirths. In terms of time, at minimum two antarmuhūrtas, and at maximum innumerable time—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth.”
If that very being has taken birth among those of minimum lifespan duration, it is of minimum an antarmuhūrta in lifespan duration and at maximum also an antarmuhūrta in lifespan duration; thus the entire statement is just the same.
If that very being has taken birth among those of maximum lifespan duration, it is of twenty-two thousand years in lifespan duration, and at maximum also of twenty-two thousand years in lifespan duration. The rest is the same, up to karmic continuance; with this exception: at minimum one, two, or three, and at maximum numerable or innumerable beings may take birth. In terms of lifespans, at minimum two rebirths, at maximum eight rebirths. In terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum one hundred and seventy-six thousand years—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth.
If that being itself becomes one of minimum lifespan duration, that very first variation should be stated; with this exception: there are three lesyās; lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, and at maximum also an antarmuhūrta; mental dispositions are unpraiseworthy; karmic continuance corresponds to lifespan duration; the rest is the same.
If that very being has taken birth among those of minimum lifespan duration, the exposition of the fourth variation is to be stated.
If that very being has taken birth among those of maximum lifespan duration, this very statement applies; with this exception: at minimum one, two, or three, and at maximum numerable or innumerable, up to: in terms of lifespans, at minimum two rebirths, at maximum eight rebirths. In terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years plus four antarmuhūrtas—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth.
If that being itself becomes one of maximum lifespan duration, it should be stated completely just like the third variation; with this exception: its own lifespan duration is at minimum twenty-two thousand years, and at maximum also twenty-two thousand years.
If that very being has taken birth among those of minimum lifespan duration, at minimum an antarmuhūrta, and at maximum also an antarmuhūrta; thus just as in the seventh variation, up to in terms of lifespans. In terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years plus four antarmuhūrtas—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth.
If that very being has taken birth among those of maximum lifespan duration, at minimum among those of twenty-two thousand years in lifespan duration, and at maximum also among those of twenty-two thousand years in lifespan duration; this very statement of the seventh variation should be known, up to in terms of lifespans. In terms of time, at minimum forty-four thousand years, at maximum one hundred and seventy-six thousand years—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth.
“If they take birth from water-bodied one-sensed animal-born beings, do they take birth from subtle water-bodied beings or gross water-bodied beings?” In this way, the fourfold division should be stated, just as for earth-bodied beings.
“Venerable Sir, if a water-bodied being is capable of taking birth among earth-bodied beings, with what lifespan duration would it take birth, Venerable Sir?”
“Gautama, at minimum it would take birth with a lifespan duration of an antarmuhūrta, at maximum with a lifespan duration of twenty-two thousand years.” In this way, nine variations resembling the variations of earth-bodied beings should be stated; with this exception: they are shaped like a drop of water. Lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, at maximum seven thousand years. Karmic continuance is also the same. Thus it is in all three variations. The duration combination in the third, sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth variations is: in terms of lifespans, at minimum two rebirths, at maximum eight rebirths; in the remaining four variations, at minimum two rebirths, at maximum innumerable rebirths. In the third variation, in terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum one hundred and sixteen thousand years—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth. In the sixth variation, in terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years plus four antarmuhūrtas—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth. In the seventh variation, in terms of time, at minimum seven thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum one hundred and sixteen thousand years—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth. In the eighth variation, in terms of time, at minimum seven thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum twenty-eight thousand years plus four antarmuhūrtas—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth. In the ninth variation, in terms of lifespans, at minimum two rebirths, at maximum eight rebirths; in terms of time, at minimum twenty-nine thousand years, at maximum one hundred and sixteen thousand years—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth. Thus the lifespan duration of water-bodied beings in all nine variations should be understood.
If they take birth from fire-bodied beings, this very statement applies also to fire-bodied beings; with this exception: in all nine variations there are three lesyās, and fire-bodied beings are shaped like a bundle of needles; the lifespan duration should be understood. In the third variation, in terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years plus twelve day-and-nights—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth. Thus the duration combination should be stated by applying [these principles].
If they take birth from wind-bodied beings, the nine variations for wind-bodied beings are just the same as for fire-bodied beings; with this exception: they are expounded as flag-shaped, and the duration combination is to be calculated in thousands of years. In the third variation, in terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum one hundred thousand years. Thus the duration combination should be stated by applying [these principles].
If they take birth from plant-bodied beings, nine variations resembling the variations of water-bodied beings should be stated for plant-bodied beings; with this exception: they have diverse shapes. Their bodily extension in the first three and last three variations is at minimum an innumerable part of a finger's breadth, and at maximum slightly more than one thousand yojanas; in the middle three variations, it is just as for earth-bodied beings. The duration combination and lifespan duration should be understood. In the third variation, in terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years plus an antarmuhūrta, at maximum one hundred and twenty-eight thousand years—for such a time it may abide, for such a time it may transmigrate back and forth. Thus the duration combination should be stated by applying [these principles].”

"If they are reborn from two-sensed beings, are they reborn from developed two-sensed beings or from undeveloped two-sensed beings?"
"Gautama, they are reborn from developed two-sensed beings and also from undeveloped two-sensed beings."
"Venerable Sir, a two-sensed being that is destined to be reborn among earth-bodied beings—among those of what lifespan duration may it be reborn?"
"Gautama, at minimum among those of an antarmuhūrta's duration, at maximum among those of twenty-two thousand years' duration."
"Venerable Sir, how many such souls are reborn at a single instant?"
"Gautama, at minimum one, two, or three; at maximum a numerable or innumerable [number] are reborn. They have sevārta-saṃhanana bone structure. Their spatial extension is at minimum an innumerableth part of a finger's width (aṅgula), at maximum twelve yojanas. They have the huṇḍaka bodily shape. They have three leśyās. They are right-believers and also wrong-believers, never of mixed belief. Invariably they have two cognitions or two non-cognitions. They lack mental activity; they possess verbal activity as well as physical activity. Application of consciousness is twofold. They have four instincts and four passions. Two sense organs are stated, namely: the sense organ of taste and the sense organ of touch. They have three transits. The rest is as for earth-bodied beings, with the difference that: their lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, at maximum twelve years. Likewise also their continuation. The rest is the very same. In terms of rebirths, at minimum two births, at maximum a numerable number of births. In terms of time, at minimum two antarmuhūrtas, at maximum a numerable period of time—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate.
If that very same [soul] is reborn among those of minimum lifespan duration, this whole exposition is the very same.
If that very same [soul] is reborn among those of maximum lifespan duration, this is the attainment of the two-sensed being, with the difference that: in terms of rebirths, at minimum two births, at maximum eight births. In terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years exceeded by an antarmuhūrta, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years exceeded by forty-eight years—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate.
If that very same [soul] itself becomes one of minimum lifespan duration, its exposition across all three variations is also the very same, with the difference that there are these seven distinctions: 1. bodily spatial extension is as for earth-bodied beings; 2. it is not a right-believer, it is a wrong-believer, not of mixed belief; 3. invariably two non-cognitions; 4. it lacks mental activity and lacks verbal activity, possessing physical activity; 5. lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, and at maximum an antarmuhūrta; 6. volitions are inauspicious; 7. continuation is like lifespan duration. The correlation in the first two variations is just so; in the third variation, in terms of rebirths, it is likewise eight births; in terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years exceeded by an antarmuhūrta, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years exceeded by four antarmuhūrtas—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate.
If that very same [soul] itself becomes one of maximum lifespan duration, its three variations should be stated like the general variations, with the difference that: across all three variations, lifespan duration is at minimum twelve years, and at maximum twelve years. Likewise also continuation. In terms of rebirths, at minimum two births, at maximum eight births. In terms of time, it should be stated by calculation up to: in the ninth variation, at minimum twenty-two thousand years exceeded by twelve years, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years exceeded by forty-eight years—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate.
If they are reborn from three-sensed beings? In this very manner nine variations should be stated, with the difference that: in all the first three variations, bodily spatial extension is at minimum an innumerableth part of an aṅgula, at maximum three gavyūtis. They have three sense organs. Lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, at maximum forty-nine nycthemerons. In the third variation, in terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years exceeded by an antarmuhūrta, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years exceeded by one hundred ninety-six nycthemerons—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate. The middle three variations are just so, and the last three variations are also just so, with the difference that: lifespan duration is at minimum forty-nine nycthemerons, and at maximum forty-nine nycthemerons. The correlation should be stated by calculation.
If they are reborn from four-sensed beings? In this very manner nine variations should also be stated for four-sensed beings, with the difference that distinctions should be recognized in these very points: bodily spatial extension is at minimum an innumerableth part of an aṅgula, at maximum four gavyūtis; lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, and at maximum six months. Likewise also continuation. They have four sense organs. The rest is just so up to the ninth variation: in terms of time, at minimum twenty-two thousand years exceeded by six months, at maximum eighty-eight thousand years exceeded by twenty-four months—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate.
If they are reborn from five-sensed animals—are they reborn from sentient five-sensed animals or from non-sentient five-sensed animals?"
"Gautama, from sentient five-sensed [animals] and from non-sentient five-sensed [animals]."
"If they are reborn from non-sentient five-sensed animals—are they reborn from aquatic animals up to are they reborn from developed ones or from undeveloped ones?"
"Gautama, they are reborn from developed ones and also from undeveloped ones."
"Venerable Sir, a non-sentient five-sensed animal that is destined to be reborn among earth-bodied beings—among those of what lifespan duration may it be reborn?"
"Gautama, at minimum among those of an antarmuhūrta's duration, at maximum among those of twenty-two thousand years' duration."
"Venerable Sir, how many such souls are reborn at a single instant?"
"In this way, just as was stated for the attainment in the general variation of the two-sensed being, so here too, with the difference that: bodily spatial extension is at minimum an innumerableth part of an aṅgula, at maximum one thousand yojanas. They have five sense organs. Lifespan duration and continuation are at minimum an antarmuhūrta, at maximum a pūrvakoṭi. The rest is the very same. In terms of rebirths, at minimum two births, at maximum eight births. In terms of time, at minimum two antarmuhūrtas, at maximum four pūrvakoṭis exceeded by eighty-eight thousand years—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate. In all nine variations, the correlation of existence: in terms of rebirths, at minimum two births, at maximum eight births. In terms of time, it should be stated by calculation, with the difference that: in the middle three variations, just as for two-sensed beings; in the last three variations, as in the first variations of this very [class], with the difference that: lifespan duration and continuation are at minimum a pūrvakoṭi, and at maximum a pūrvakoṭi. The rest is the very same up to the ninth variation: at minimum one pūrvakoṭi exceeded by twenty-two thousand years, at maximum four pūrvakoṭis exceeded by eighty-eight thousand years—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate.
If they are reborn from sentient five-sensed animals—are they of numerable-year lifespans or of innumerable-year lifespans?"
"Gautama, they are of numerable-year lifespans, not of innumerable-year lifespans."
"If they are of numerable-year lifespans, are they from aquatic animals?"
"The rest is as for non-sentient ones up to:
'Venerable Sir, how many such souls are reborn at a single instant?' As was stated for a sentient soul being reborn in Ratnaprabhā, so here too, with the difference that: spatial extension is at minimum an innumerableth part of an aṅgula, at maximum one thousand yojanas. The rest is just so up to: in terms of time, at minimum two antarmuhūrtas, at maximum four pūrvakoṭis exceeded by eighty-eight thousand years—for this much time it may abide, for this much time it may transmigrate. Thus the correlation across all nine variations is entirely as for non-sentient ones. Its attainment in the first three variations is this very same, and in the middle three variations it is this very same, with the difference that there are these nine distinctions: spatial extension is at minimum an innumerableth part of an aṅgula, at maximum an innumerableth part of an aṅgula; three leśyās; wrong-believer; two non-cognitions; possessing physical activity; three transits; lifespan duration is at minimum an antarmuhūrta, and at maximum an antarmuhūrta; inauspicious volitions; continuation is like lifespan duration. The rest is the very same. In the last three variations, it is just as in the first variation, with the difference that: lifespan duration and continuation are at minimum a pūrvakoṭi, and at maximum a pūrvakoṭi. The rest is the very same."

"If they are reborn from humans, are they reborn from sentient humans or non-sentient humans?"
"Gautama! They are reborn from sentient humans, and also from non-sentient humans."
"Venerable Sir! A non-sentient human who is destined to be reborn among earth-bodied beings—with what lifespan duration would he be reborn, Venerable Sir?"
"Just as the three variations were stated for a non-sentient five-sensed animal of minimum lifespan duration, likewise for this one too the general three variations should be stated, fully without omission; the remaining six are not stated."
"If they are reborn from sentient humans, are they of numerable years of life, or of innumerable years of life?"
"Gautama! They are of numerable years of life, not of innumerable years of life."
"If they are of numerable years of life, are they developed ones of numerable years of life, or undeveloped ones of numerable years of life?"
"Gautama! Developed ones of numerable years of life, [and] undeveloped ones of numerable years of life, up to they are reborn."
"Venerable Sir! A sentient human who is destined to be reborn among earth-bodied beings—with what lifespan duration do they be reborn, Venerable Sir?"
"Gautama! At a minimum with a lifespan of an antarmuhūrta, at a maximum with a lifespan of twenty-two thousand years."
"Venerable Sir! In a single moment, how many of those souls are reborn?"
"Just as for one being reborn in Ratnaprabhā, so also the attributes are in all three variations; with the difference that: bodily stature at a minimum is an innumerableth part of an aṅgula, at a maximum five hundred dhanuṣas. Lifespan duration at a minimum is an antarmuhūrta, at a maximum one pūrvakoṭi. Likewise duration of connection. The progression in nine variations is just as for a sentient five-sensed [animal]. The attributes in the middle three variations are just as in the middle three of a sentient five-sensed [animal]. The rest is entirely identical. The last three variations are like the general variations of this itself, with the difference that: bodily stature at a minimum is five hundred dhanuṣas, at a maximum also five hundred dhanuṣas. Lifespan duration and duration of connection at a minimum are one pūrvakoṭi, at a maximum also one pūrvakoṭi. The rest is just the same."
"If they are reborn from gods, are they reborn from mansion-dwelling gods, from forest-dwelling gods, from astral gods, [or] from celestial gods?"
"Gautama! They are reborn from mansion-dwelling gods, up to they are reborn also from celestial gods."
"If they are reborn from mansion-dwelling gods, are they reborn from Asurakumāra mansion-dwelling gods up to Stanitakumāra mansion-dwelling gods?"
"Gautama! They are reborn from Asurakumāra mansion-dwelling gods up to Stanitakumāra mansion-dwelling gods."
"Venerable Sir! An Asurakumāra who is destined to be reborn among earth-bodied beings—with what lifespan duration would he be reborn, Venerable Sir?"
"Gautama! At a minimum with a lifespan of an antarmuhūrta, at a maximum with a lifespan of twenty-two thousand years."
"Venerable Sir! In a single moment, how many of those souls are reborn?"
"Gautama! At a minimum one or two or three; at a maximum numerable or innumerable are reborn."
"Venerable Sir! What bone-joint structure are the bodies of those souls taught to have?"
"Gautama! Devoid of the six bone-joint structures, up to they transform."
"Venerable Sir! How large is the bodily stature of those souls?"
"Gautama! Bodily stature is taught to be of two kinds, namely: lifelong and post-transformational. Among them, that which is lifelong is at a minimum an innumerableth part of an aṅgula, at a maximum seven ratnis. Among them, that which is post-transformational is at a minimum a numerableth part of an aṅgula, at a maximum one hundred thousand yojanas."
"Venerable Sir! What shape are the bodies of those souls taught to have?"
"Gautama! They are taught to be of two kinds, namely: lifelong and post-transformational. Among them, those which are lifelong are taught to be of symmetrical shape. Among them, those which are post-transformational are taught to be of diverse shapes. Four leśyās. All three worldviews. Three kinds of knowledge necessarily; three kinds of non-knowledge alternatively. All three activities. Both applications of consciousness. Four instincts. Four passions. Five senses. Five bodily expulsions. Both kinds of feeling. Female-gendered and male-gendered, not neuter-gendered. Lifespan duration at a minimum ten thousand years, at a maximum exceeding one sāgaropama. Dispositions are innumerable, both auspicious and inauspicious. Duration of connection is like lifespan duration. In terms of states of existence, two receptions of existence. In terms of time, at a minimum ten thousand years exceeded by an antarmuhūrta; at a maximum exceeding one sāgaropama exceeded by twenty-two thousand years: for this much time he may abide, for this much time he may cycle between coming and going. In this way all nine variations should be understood; with the difference that in the middle and last three variations, the distinction in lifespan of the Asurakumāras should be understood; the rest of the attributes and bodily progression should be understood according to the general rule. Everywhere there are two receptions of existence, up to in the ninth variation, in terms of time at a minimum exceeding one sāgaropama exceeded by twenty-two thousand years, at a maximum also exceeding one sāgaropama exceeded by twenty-two thousand years: for this much time he may abide, for this much time he may cycle between coming and going."
"Venerable Sir! A Nāgakumāra who is destined [to be reborn] among earth-bodied beings?"
"This same exposition [applies] up to 'in terms of states of existence'; with the difference that: lifespan duration at a minimum is ten thousand years, at a maximum a little less than two palyopamas. Likewise also the duration of connection. In terms of time, at a minimum ten thousand years exceeded by an antarmuhūrta; at a maximum a little less than two palyopamas exceeded by twenty-two thousand years. In this way all nine variations are like the variations of the Asurakumāras; with the difference that one should know the lifespan duration and the specification of time. In this way up to the Stanitakumāras."
"If they are reborn from forest-dwelling gods, [are they reborn] from Piśāca forest-dwelling gods up to Gandharva forest-dwelling gods?"
"Gautama! From Piśāca forest-dwelling gods up to Gandharva forest-dwelling gods."
"Venerable Sir! A forest-dwelling god who is destined to be reborn among earth-bodied beings?"
"For them also, nine variations should be stated like the variations of the Asurakumāras; with the difference that one should know the lifespan duration and the specification of time. Lifespan duration at a minimum is ten thousand years, at a maximum one palyopama. The rest is just the same."
"If they are reborn from astral gods, are they reborn from astral gods of the moon celestial abodes up to astral gods of the star celestial abodes?"
"Gautama! From moon celestial abodes up to star celestial abodes."
"Venerable Sir! An astral god who is destined to be reborn among earth-bodied beings?"
"The attributes are like those of the Asurakumāras, with the difference that only one tejo-leśyā is taught. Three kinds of knowledge and three kinds of non-knowledge necessarily. Lifespan duration at a minimum is an eighth part of a palyopama, at a maximum one palyopama exceeded by one hundred thousand years. Likewise also duration of connection.
In terms of time, at a minimum an eighth part of a palyopama exceeded by an antarmuhūrta, at a maximum one palyopama exceeded by one hundred thousand years [and] twenty-two thousand years: for this much time he may abide, for this much time he may cycle between coming and going. In this way the remaining eight variations should also be stated; with the difference that one should know the lifespan duration and the specification of time."
"If they are reborn from celestial gods, are they reborn from gods residing in the heavens or from gods beyond the heavens?"
"Gautama! From gods residing in the heavens, not from gods beyond the heavens."
"If they are reborn from gods residing in the heavens, are they reborn from gods residing in the Saudharma heaven up to gods residing in the Acyuta heaven?"
"Gautama! They are reborn from gods residing in the Saudharma heaven [and] gods residing in the Īśāna heaven, not from Sanatkumāra up to not from gods residing in the Acyuta heaven."
"Venerable Sir! A Saudharma god who is destined to be reborn among earth-bodied beings—with what lifespan duration would he be reborn, Venerable Sir?"
"As is the variation for an astral god; with the difference that: lifespan duration and duration of connection at a minimum are one palyopama, at a maximum two sāgaropamas.
In terms of time, at a minimum one palyopama exceeded by an antarmuhūrta, at a maximum two sāgaropamas exceeded by twenty-two thousand years: for this much time he may abide, for this much time he may cycle between coming and going. In this way the remaining eight variations should also be stated; with the difference that one should know the lifespan duration and the specification of time."
"Venerable Sir! An Īśāna god who is destined [to be reborn]?"
"In this way nine variations should also be stated for an Īśāna god; with the difference that: lifespan duration and duration of connection at a minimum are a little more than one palyopama, at a maximum a little more than two sāgaropamas. The rest is entirely identical."
"Truly so, Venerable Sir! Truly so, Venerable Sir!"—and so on, he abides.

"From where, Venerable Sir, are water-bodied beings reborn?" Thus, just as in the chapter on earth-bodied beings, up to:
"Venerable Sir, when an earth-bodied being is capable of being reborn among water-bodied beings, in what lifespan duration, Venerable Sir, would it be reborn?"
"Gautama, at the minimum in a lifespan duration of an antarmuhūrta, at the maximum in a lifespan duration of seven thousand years it would be reborn." Thus it should be stated similar to the chapter on earth-bodied beings, with the distinction that one should understand the lifespan duration and the saṃvedha. The rest is just the same.
"That is so, Venerable Sir! That is so, Venerable Sir!"
